ACT doesn't try to eliminate anxiety—it changes your relationship to it. Instead of fighting anxious thoughts, you learn to carry them lightly while moving toward what matters.
Understanding Anxiety Through ACT
In ACT, anxiety is not the enemy. It's a normal human experience—your mind trying to protect you from perceived threats. The problem isn't the anxiety itself; it's:
- Getting "hooked" by anxious thoughts
- Struggling to make anxiety go away
- Letting anxiety control your life
- Avoiding valued activities because of fear
The ACT Approach to Anxiety
Notice
Acknowledge the anxious thoughts and feelings. "I'm noticing that my mind is giving me worried thoughts."
Defuse
Step back from the thoughts. "I'm having the thought that something bad will happen." Thoughts are thoughts, not facts.
Accept
Make room for the uncomfortable feelings. You don't have to like them—just allow them to be present without struggle.
Connect to Values
Ask: "What matters to me here? What do I want to stand for?" Reconnect with what's important.
Take Action
Do what matters—even with anxiety along for the ride. You can feel scared AND move forward.
A Different Goal
The goal isn't to feel less anxious; it's to live more fully. Sometimes you'll feel less anxious as a side effect. But even if you don't, you'll be living in alignment with your values—and that's what creates a meaningful life.
