Imagine a good friend coming to you in pain. How would you respond? With warmth, understanding, and encouragement—not criticism and judgment. Now consider: do you treat yourself the same way?
The Double Standard
Most of us are much harsher with ourselves than we'd ever be with a friend. We say things to ourselves we would never say to someone we care about. This double standard is so normal we barely notice it.
The Friend Exercise
Think of something you're currently struggling with or criticizing yourself about. Now imagine a close friend came to you with the exact same struggle. What would you say to them? How would your tone be? Write it down. Then read it—to yourself, about yourself.
Transforming Self-Talk
"You're such an idiot for making that mistake."
→ "Hey, everyone makes mistakes. This is hard. What can you learn from it?"
"You should be over this by now."
→ "Healing takes time. You're doing the best you can."
"You always mess things up."
→ "This didn't go well. That doesn't define you. What's next?"
Building the Habit
- Notice when you're being self-critical
- Pause and ask: "Would I say this to a friend?"
- Rephrase with kindness and understanding
- Practice—this new voice takes time to develop
