The ABC model is the foundation of REBT. It reveals that events don't directly cause our emotional reactions—our beliefs about those events do. This insight gives us tremendous power to change how we feel.

The ABCDE Framework

A

Activating Event

Something happens—an event, situation, or trigger

B

Belief

Your belief or interpretation about the event (rational or irrational)

C

Consequence

The emotional and behavioral result of your belief

D

Disputing

Challenging and questioning irrational beliefs

E

Effective New Outlook

A more rational, flexible way of seeing the situation

Example: The ABC in Action

Scenario: You didn't get the promotion

A (Event): Someone else was promoted over you

B (Irrational Belief): "I MUST be recognized. This proves I'm a failure."

C (Consequence): Depression, shame, withdrawal

D (Dispute): "Must I be promoted to have worth? Does one outcome define me?"

E (New Outlook): "I wanted this and I'm disappointed. But I'm not a failure—I'll learn and try again."

Using the ABC in Daily Life

When you notice a strong emotional reaction:

  1. Identify the triggering event (A)
  2. Notice your emotional response (C)
  3. Look for the belief connecting them (B)
  4. Check for irrational demands (musts, shoulds)
  5. Dispute with questions (D)
  6. Develop a rational alternative (E)
